Smell Younger, More Attractive and Thinner
When
I first heard the concept, ‘Smell Younger’, I thought this was surely a gimmick
by perfume companies.
But,
to me, it was still intriguing.
Perhaps
you’ve heard about pheromones and how the hormonal smell can attract the
opposite sex. Since they have an
effect I thought, maybe
this wasn't just about
advertising. So, I decided to do my own research.
And
I found that …
It’s
not all in the eye of the beholder it’s also in the nose. Some new
research has shown that scents can actually make you look younger, more
attractive and thinner.
Now,
I want some of that !
Smell More Attractive – the brain receives pleasant smells as an emotional
evaluation. In a recent study, 12 women and six men were
asked to rate photos of women on attractiveness. Simultaneously an odor
was released as each photo was presented. The scents directly affected
how each participant rated the picture. When smelling a foul smell (fish
oil was used), the photos were rated much lower than that of the rose smell1,2.
Having said that, a
rose scent is associated with older women.
To Smell 6-10 Years Younger – Studies say, you want to choose
pink grapefruit. What’s interesting about this study is that even the
participants that didn’t like the smell of pink grapefruit still guessed the
subjects’ age 6+ years younger 3,4 . Pink grapefruit only works on women . It does nothing for men – sorry guys!
Other
scents used that did not affect the perception of being younger were cucumber,
lavender, melon, bananas and spearmint leaves (at least we know what to avoid
when trying to smell younger).
Because smells bypass the rational part of the brain and directly affect
the emotional center, you can Smell Thinner with spicy florals, pink grapefruit or any other
citrus scent. Vanilla, on the other hand, will make you appear
heavier5.
One
rule in any perfume you choose is to not overdo it because it can have the
opposite effect.
If
you want to make your own perfume you can find essential oils online and add
them to a base consisting of a tablespoon of grapeseed oil ( or jojoba oil ) and a tablespoon of
vodka.
All
in all, if you like perfume and it makes you happy you will appear
younger. But adding some pink grapefruit might get you carded ;).
To
a younger more healthy you!

Anti-Aging's Secret Hormone
If you’re anything like me, you think melatonin is something you take to help you sleep.
But, like me, you may be surprised at what I’ve learned and what I’m about to tell you.
Melatonin could possibly be one of the best little-known secrets of anti-aging.
And it’s not all about beauty sleep.
So what exactly is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted by a pea-sized gland in your brain called the pineal gland.
Melatonin is responsible for regulating sleep. And it's often referred to as the hormone of darkness1 because it starts to be released as night falls. It’s also known as the sleep hormone because it keeps your body telling time. But, like most hormones, melatonin declines with age.
What you may not know is that melatonin is one of the most powerful antioxidants2,3,4. It also supports other antioxidants5 so they can do their job.
The research is so amazing that I promise it won’t put you to sleep.
Melatonin has been found to:
•Reverse age-related changes in the brain6. Melatonin is an antioxidant and can break the blood-brain barrier, which means it can reach the brain and fight off the free radicals. Free-radical damage causes oxidation in the brain and melatonin has been found to be a very effective neuroprotectant. Studies also show that people with Alzheimer’s have very low melatonin levels7.
•Restore thyroid function in perimenopausal and menopausal women. You see, all the hormones are tied into your biological clock and melatonin is the mechanism that keeps your body telling time. A major complaint of perimenopausal women with thyroid problems is that they aren’t sleeping properly. Some women have even reported having their periods returning to normal after two months of taking 3mgs of melatonin, 30 minutes before going to bed.
•Stimulate the release of human-growth hormone8. You lose muscle tone with declining growth hormone. It’s a major reason why so many menopausal women have unexplained weight gain.
•Help bone repair, assisting the “development of the hard tissues9,10”, making bones harder and denser for age-related bone loss11. Studies have also shown that melatonin can speed up the healing process after a fracture.
•Aid in wound healing, protect your telomeres12 and stimulate cell growth when applied topically. Its antioxidant properties are a guard against oxidative stress and free-radical damage13.
Now that’s a lot for one little hormone!
Melatonin may also be used topically. But whether you choose to take a capsule (3mgs), a cream, or both, it’s an important hormone to add to your anti-aging arsenal.

Look Younger than Your Years
Fool Them
with These Quick Tips
They Will Never Guess Your Real Age!
You're going to a reunion or just to lunch with some younger somethings. Maybe you just need a pick-me-up. Here are some quick tips to make you look more youthful and vibrant … quickly. Some of these tips sound a little simple and they are common sense but we forget to do them. They make all the difference, especially if you do everything at once – well, within a week.
Whiten your teeth – nothing shows your age more than a yellow, stained smile. There are many at-home whitening systems that work well. No need to visit the dentist for this one. You can get whiteners at your local discount store or online. Purchase whitening strips, hydrogen peroxide or a carbamide peroxide gel for a whiter, brighter smile in a few days. I have sensitive teeth so I prefer hydrogen peroxide but they all work well.
Cover up those grays – just take an eyebrow pencil to the grays for a quick fix. But, if you have time, color your hair -- nothing drastic, choose two shades lighter than your natural color.
Update your hairstyle – again, nothing drastic, just a fresh cut that’s modern can make all the difference.
Get a manicure – a professional manicure can make your hands look so much younger. Hands really do show our true age. So why not have people looking at how beautiful your nails are rather than the age of your hands. It’s sleight of hand.
Get a new outfit – having something new, in style and pretty, to put on makes you feel better about yourself (not to mention makes you appear more youthful). You can really show your age with that outfit from 15 years ago. Go a step further if you have time - clean out your closet. If it’s older than two years give it to charity.
Buy a new-color lipstick – lipstick can make us feel so good. It was probably the first makeup you ever used. I know my grandmother wouldn’t go anywhere without it. Lipstick just make you feel like a girl. Treat yourself ... when was the last time you bought a new lipstick?
Buy some fun jewelry – I recently went out with a friend who is in her 70’s and she had on the most fantastic costume jewelry. It really made her shine. Sometimes throwing on a bold necklace and/or earrings can just make all the difference to an outfit. But make sure it’s updated. Charming Charlie’s is one of my favorite places to get something inexpensive. They are popping up in most malls these days. But if you don’t have Charming Charlie’s there’s always Claire’s.
Give yourself a spa day – at home or at a real spa. There are lots of masks out there to give you a quick at-home tightening treatment. I like a mud mask. Give yourself a steam then a mask. Put egg whites around the eyes before your mask to help with the crow's-feet.
Listen to music – this is something that we forget to do but it really does put a bounce in your step and a twinkle in your eye. Make an effort to shut the TV off and turn on the radio, stereo or iPod. You’ll be glad you did. Music really is soul food.
Have your eyebrows done – most nail salons offer this service. I was always a little leery about having someone else do my eyebrows. My regular nail technician kept asking me every time I was in if I wanted my eyebrows waxed. I was kind of getting a complex. But I finally gave in and wow, she really opened up my eyes. It was the best eight dollars I had spent in a long time.
Use perfume – studies show that using perfume, especially if it has a citrus scent, can make people think you are seven years younger than you really are. (more on this topic in a future post/newsletter). Just put on some fresh, clean smelling perfume everyday and fool everyone … it’s our secret.
